Conversion Services

Get Added Processing Capacity and Capability from our World Class Conversion Services and Toll Processing

Carpenter Technology’s Conversion Services Division provides a broad range of toll processing capabilities, including melting, remelting, hot/cold working and rolling, and heat treating of customer-owned ferrous and non-ferrous alloy, stainless steel, nickel-based superalloy, and titanium materials.

From primary melting to finishing, Carpenter Technology is uniquely equipped to provide the comprehensive processing control and capabilities necessary to expertly convert our customers’ stock materials—adhering to their prescribed instructions for manufacturing procedures, specific chemistry, and form requirements.

Melting and Remelting

Carpenter Technology’s sophisticated arc melting / argon oxygen decarburization (AOD), vacuum induction melting (VIM), vacuum arc remelting (VAR), and electroslag remelting (ESR) furnaces provide greater control over the chemistry of materials and allow us to produce a more refined, uniform product.

For industries such as Aerospace and Power Generation, melting processes can be combined for double-vacuum melting (VIM-VAR) or triple melting (VIM-ESR-VAR) to further refine and produce premium melted products with superior cleanliness and a more homogenous microstructure.

Hot and Cold Working Capabilities

Customers rely on Carpenter Technology’s extensive metal forming and shaping expertise for hot working and cold working of products and components with demanding requirements, including exceptional strength, custom sizing, specific application, or performance needs.

Hot Working Capabilities

  • Open Die Forging
  • Rolling
  • Upsetting

Cold Working Capabilities

  • Centerless Grinding
  • Bar Turning
  • Drawing
  • Machining
  • NDT
Hot Rolling and Cold Rolling

Carpenter Technology offers hot rolling and cold rolling of materials into flat and long form components of varying shape, gauge, length, and width. Depending on their temperature and metalworking process, these rolled products are converted into plate, narrow strip, wire rod, bar, and other forms for our customers' specific and demanding applications.

Hot Rolling

Hot rolling involves heating material, so it can be shaped and formed more easily. Oftentimes a faster manufacturing process, hot rolling produces an end product with tremendous versatility and value, which can remain rough rolled or finished further for a smooth surface.

Cold Rolling

Cold rolling takes place after the working material has been cooled and then further processed through annealing and tempering. While reducing the gauge of the workpiece, the cold rolling process also provides an end product with superior dimension tolerance, concentricity, straightness, and surface finishing.

Heat Treating

Carpenter Technology’s Conversion Services Division also has the knowledge and resources to further manipulate and enhance the microstructure of our customers’ alloy, stainless steel, superalloy, and titanium materials through specialized heat treating processes, including hardening, tempering, aging, annealing, and normalizing.

We utilize our industry-leading metallurgical and product development expertise to methodically control the various thermal treatment processes. This enables Carpenter Technology to meet our customers’ exacting requirements and enhance specific properties of working material, such as increased hardness, temperature resistance, ductility, and overall structural strength.
