Carpenter Technology Expanding into Alabama


Alabama Operations artist renderingCarpenter Technology (NYSE:CRS) is strengthening its core premium metals business by constructing a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Limestone County, Alabama. The new $500 million Athens Operations facility will include remelting, forging and associated finishing and testing capabilities. It is expected to be in operation by early 2014.

Athens Operations will ultimately be capable of producing approximately 27,000 tons per year of additional premium product and will be designed with modern technology and optimum product flow to meet customer requirements for reduced lead times. The facility is being built in response to strong customer demand for premium alloy products primarily in the fast-growing aerospace and energy industries.

Project Schedule:

    • April 2012 - Groundbreaking
    • September 2012 - Building construction began
    • February 2013 - VAR furnaces begin to arrive 
    • March 2013 - Forge foundation to be completed 
    • April 2013 - Met/Chem lab opens; Hydraulic Radial Press begins to arrive
    • April 2013 - Equipment installation starts   
    • July 2013 - 75-80 employees on staff 
    • March 2014 - Production start-up

Location:

The approximately 230-acre site is located near Athens, Alabama, in the Huntsville Metropolitan Statistical Area.  About 200 people are expected to work at the facility when it reaches full production.
