Specialty Alloys Operations manufactures stainless steel
and specialty metals in long product (bar, rod, wire, narrow strip and billet)
form for applications requiring corrosion resistance and specific mechanical, physical,
magnetic and fabricating properties. Alloy types include:
- Stainless steels
- Bearing steels
- Superior corrosion resistant alloys (to withstand harsh, corrosive environments,
such as those found in chemical and petroleum processing industries)
- Tool and die steels
- High temperature alloys (that have been used for components in elevated temperature applications
such as jet engines)
- Magnetic, controlled expansion, electrical and electronic alloys
These steels and alloys can be made in a variety of special purpose grades
and conditions. They are distributed through Carpenter’s own worldwide
network of service centers, enabling the company to work closely
with its customers to produce specialty metals and alloys with the properties
and characteristics they need.
To obtain unique alloy characteristics, Specialty Alloy Operations utilizes
some of the most advanced equipment in the steel industry, a highly skilled
engineering staff, and sophisticated quality control procedures. Furthermore,
the division has a team of talented specialists working to develop breakthrough
products and processes.
Manufacturing facilities include:
- Carpenter’s main Specialty Alloys mill in Reading, Pa.
- A modern mini-mill in Hartsville, S.C., that
produces more than 50 grades of stainless steel and specialty alloys.
- Carpenter Specialty Wire Products in Orangeburg, S.C., a wire redrawing business that produces stainless and other specialty alloy wire in sizes down
to one-third the diameter of a human hair.
- Carpenter Technology U.K., a strip manufacturing facility in Crawley, England - produces high metering accuracy electrical cores for utility current transformers.
- Kalyani Carpenter Special Steels Ltd. and Kalyani Carpenter Metal Centres
Ltd., a joint specialty steel manufacturing and distribution venture with
Kalyani Steels Ltd. in India.
Conversion Services
Carpenter’s Shalmet Corp., located in Orwigsburg, Pa., and Elyria, Ohio,
converts “black” coil and bar to “bright” round bar and
coil products. Shalmet also precision-bores long lengths of high-strength specialty
steels.
Carpenter Supply Solutions
Carpenter Specialty Alloys Operation’s offers a wide range of supply chain solutions including custom finishing services,
inventory and delivery programs that can help customers save time and money.
Distribution
In addition to its traditional service center network, Carpenter also operates:
- Talley Metals, based in Hartsville, S.C., which sells stainless to third-party distributors.
- Aceros Fortuna, a Carpenter company that distributes metals from warehouses
throughout Mexico.
