Washington, Pa. (December 4, 2003) UPG (Ultimate
Performance Grade) Beta titanium material made by Dynamet Incorporated will be used in the
drive clutch, torsion and suspension springs on the 2004 Arctic Cat King Cat mountain
snowmobiles -- believed to be the first time that titanium springs will be standard on a
manufacturer's original equipment snowmobile. The springs are being manufactured by Renton
Coil Spring Company (RCS), in Renton, Wash.
For several years, RCS has provided titanium springs to the Arctic Cat factory race
team for use in snocross racing. Snocross champion Tucker Hibbert had tested RCS' titanium
spring technology, winning five national championships with Arctic Cat sleds using RCS
coil springs.
Titanium coil springs are designed to improve steering, ride and pitch control, while
lowering sled weight and reducing rider fatigue.
"Dynamet's material has provided advantages to snocross competitors and will now
benefit recreational snowmobilers as well," says Brian Brandstetter, manager of
marketing at Dynamet. "Our partnership with RCS has allowed Dynamet to expand our
participation in the powersports market, an exciting new segment for us, and to show that
titanium is a versatile material with many advantages over traditional spring
alloys."
2004 Arctic Cat Race Sleds
Open class modified sleds will come with complete suspension and coil spring kits.
Stock Sno Pro 440 models will have a factory-installed titanium kit as an option.
Suspension Kit
Titanium spring upgrade kits are also now available for the Arctic Firecat F7, F6 and
F5 (snowmobile) models. "The kit allows a good sport rider to bring their Firecat to
a new level of performance," says Steve Houle, owner of Speedwerx, Inc., Forest Lake,
Minn. "Steering, entering, and exiting corners is much better with the titanium
springs than the stock Firecat's springs."
The kit consists of two-stage ski springs, a two-stage torque arm spring assembly,
torsion springs and RCS patented adjustable spring blocks. For information on the
kit, contact Speedwerx (tel: 651.982.6020) or RCS at (tel: 425.255.1453).
RCS offers a full line of clutch springs for racing and mountain sleds. The privately
held manufacturer formed a strategic alliance last year with Dynamet for titanium coil
springs made from UPG Beta material for high-performance motorsports and recreational
applications.
Dynamet, a subsidiary of Carpenter Technology Corp. (NYSE:CRS) that is based in
